ART // Carsten NICOLAI
German, born 1965
Cartsen Nicolai, born 1965 in Karl-Marx-Stadt, is part of an artist generation who works intensively in the transitional area between art and science. As a visual artist Nicolai seeks to overcome the separation of art forms and genres for an integrated artistic approach. Influenced by scientific reference systems, Nicolai often engages mathematic patterns such as grid and codes, as well as error, random and self-organized structures.
As a musician Nicolai uses the stage names Alva Noto, Noto and Aleph-1.
